Overnight, Wall Street recorded its steepest single-day percentage drop since 2020, wiping out $2.4 trillion in market value as investor concerns over a global trade war and recession intensified.

The U.S. imposition of 26 percent reciprocal tariffs caused the Indian market to close lower on Thursday. However, losses were limited by a rise in pharmaceutical stocks that were exempt from duties and a tariff rate that was significantly lower than that of other Asian markets. The broad Nifty 50 index lost 82.25 points, or 0.35 percent, to close at 23,250.10, while the benchmark BSE Sensex fell 322.08 points, or 0.42 percent, to 76,295.36.
